PowerGate™ is a WebSTAR™ (and compatible Macintosh web servers) ACGI which allows WWW control of the PowerKey™ Pro from Sophisticated Circuits, Inc.
The PowerKey™ Pro can be used to remotely reboot hung servers by cycling the power to the CPUs.
Installation & Use
Place the PowerGate™ folder in your WebSTAR™ folder wherever you would like. You do not need to set up a realm for this ACGI because it handles authentication internally (although you are certainly welcome to do so -- this just adds two layers of authentication to the login process).
Call the ACGI directly (e.g. http://yourserver/path-to-PowerGateFolder/PowerGate.acgi) to get to the control form. This area allows you to turn on, turn off, or cycle the power on any of the outlets on the PowerKey™ Pro. From here there are also links that allow access to the administrative functions of the ACGI (to change the names of the outlets/PowerKeys and/or login password) and to the online help section. PowerGate™ relies on a few external files for building the Web page interface, and these need to remain in the same folder as the PowerGate™ CGI.
The username is not used for authentication, so you can use anything that you like, but you must enter something in this field. The default password is "powergate" (without the quotation marks). It is highly recommended that you change this immediately.
PowerGate™ requires a serial number to function. You should have received a demo serial number in the package you downloaded which you'll need to enter into PowerGate™ by choosing the "Serial Numbers..." menu item from the Edit menu. If the serial number you received has already expired or you need longer to evaluate the software, please Email support@acmetech.com for a new expiring key.
Suggestions for Use
WebStar or another Mac Web server must be running on the machine where PowerGate™ is installed in order to control the PowerKey™ unit. If you only have a single Web server and it's this machine you need remote reboot access to, we suggest you either run an inexpensive shareware Web server on a different machine connected to the Internet and access the CGI through this server, or you could use our FingerToys™ product and a finger protocol client as an alternative access mechanism. For other options, please contact us directly. Eudora comes with a finger client built-in, and there are several shareware applications such as "Finger" from Peter Lewis.
Using Multiple PowerKey™ Units: If you administer more than one Mac Web server, you can purchase additional copies of PowerGate™ and an extra PowerKey™ Pro Unit to have access to any of the servers regardless of which one may have crashed.
